Nick Hockley, the CEO of Cricket Australia (CA), has announced his decision to step down following the upcoming cricket season, marking the end of nearly 13 years with Australian cricket, including five years at the helm as CEO. Hockley is expected to depart around the end of March 2025, though the exact timing of his departure will depend on the appointment process for his successor.

A Legacy of Leadership and Growth

CA Chairman Mike Baird confirmed Hockley’s plans, acknowledging the significant impact of his leadership, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Baird praised Hockley for his role in securing long-term deals and ensuring substantial growth and stability for Australian cricket. Under Hockley’s guidance, CA has seen considerable progress, including the implementation of a new five-year strategy, the negotiation of long-term media deals, and a groundbreaking new player agreement that significantly increased pay for female cricketers. Hockley’s tenure also witnessed the revitalization of the Big Bash League.

Baird emphasized that Hockley’s immediate focus is on delivering a successful summer season for all stakeholders, including fans, players, and partners. He assured that there would be an appropriate time to celebrate Hockley’s achievements once he steps down. The CA Board will soon initiate the process of finding a successor to ensure a smooth transition and continued success for the organization.

Navigating Through Challenges and Achievements

Hockley’s journey with Cricket Australia began in October 2012 as General Manager of Commercial & Marketing for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, a role in which he played a pivotal part in the tournament’s financial success. He later served as Head of Commercial Projects and CEO of the Local Organizing Committee for the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, overseeing a record-breaking Women’s T20 World Cup final.

Appointed as interim CEO in June 2020, Hockley was confirmed as the permanent CEO eleven months later. His tenure has been marked by outstanding on-field successes for Australia’s national teams, including the first tour to Pakistan in 24 years, multiple Ashes victories, six ICC trophies, and gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
