Despite these difficulties, she found strength and purpose. “I never smiled and never talked. There wasn’t anything to smile about and there was nothing to say,” she recalls. The turning point came when she was 18, and her focus shifted to creating a stable future for herself and her daughter. This resilience later fueled her commitment to helping other foster youths through Beyond Our Kin.

Walker’s journey from a troubled foster child to the founder of Beyond Our Kin illustrates how deeply personal experiences can drive professional mission and impact. “The foster system is full of statistics,” Walker says. “I wanted to be one of those who pushed through severe challenges and made it out. With faith, grit, and perseverance, we can change the narrative.” Her advocacy and dedication reflect a deep-seated belief in the power of resilience and the importance of community support.
