Former Visa CEO Alfred Kelly Joins General Motors Board of Directors

General Motors Co. (GM) has appointed Alfred F. Kelly, Jr., the former Chairman and CEO of Visa Inc., to its board of directors, expanding the board to 13 members. Kelly, who led Visa through a period of rapid technological transformation, brings a wealth of experience in finance, technology, and consumer insights, key areas for GM as it continues to innovate in electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous technology.

Mary Barra, GM’s CEO, praised Kelly’s appointment, citing his expertise as a significant asset in helping the automaker explore growth opportunities in EVs, autonomous technology, and software services. “Al’s deep knowledge of finance, digital commerce, and consumer behavior will strengthen our board and help drive GM’s transformation in the years ahead,” Barra said.

Kelly, 66, served as Visa’s CEO from 2016 to 2023, overseeing the global payment giant during a period of unprecedented digital and technological advancements. In 2019, he was named Chairman of the Board and later became Executive Chairman in 2023 before stepping down in early 2024.

In a statement, Kelly expressed his excitement about joining GM at a pivotal time. “GM is at the forefront of leveraging technology to create innovative customer experiences and transform the future of transportation,” Kelly said. “I look forward to working alongside the board to help GM realize its vision and deliver value to its shareholders.”

With Kelly’s addition, GM’s board of directors now includes six women and 12 independent directors, showcasing the company’s commitment to diversity and leadership in multiple sectors, including manufacturing, digital commerce, defense, transportation, and cybersecurity. Kelly’s vast experience will be instrumental as GM pushes forward its ambitious plans to become a leader in EVs and autonomous driving technology.
